Forward chaining occurs when the initial step in a behavioral sequence is taught first, then the next, until all steps are linked together. The final behavior consists of all the chaining steps. In this example, forward chaining is an effective way for Desiree to teach her client to put his pants on because the steps cannot be performed in any other order. For example, he cannot put a leg into his pants before he has taken them from the drawer and he cannot pull them up before he has placed both legs into the pants.
