The hippocampus is primarily used for memory. In Alzheimer's disease and other disorders affecting the elderly, the hippocampus is one of the first areas of the brain to sustain damage. The spinal cord collects sensory information about pressure, temperature and pain, and sends this information to muscles. The thalamus serves as a relay station for sensory and motor information. In all senses except smell, receptors are sent to the thalamus and then passed to the cortex.
