In order to determine size and distance, individuals use familiar size, occlusion, and textured gradients. Edward is familiar with the average size of a car. He understands that if a car appears very small, it is probably far away. Occlusion occurs when your eyes perceive that some objects are in front of others. From where Edward is standing, he may be able to see that objects, such as other cars, bushes or people are in front on the car parked across the street. Textured gradients refer to the ability to distinguish texture on an object. The further away an object is, the less the eye can see details such as texture.
