The Pequot War ended all hope of peaceful coexistence between Native Americans and Puritan settlers. While the Puritans had formed positive relationships with Native Americans and worked to convert them to Christianity, both the Native Americans and Puritans feared that members of their community were adapting characteristics of the other. Although the English began with the intent to treat Native Americans better than the Spanish colonizers had, the unprecedented brutality of both sides during the war defined British policy. Recognizing that the Pequot would remain a threat as long as they were in the region, the Puritans pressed most of those who survived into slavery in the Caribbean, including those who had adopted Christianity.
