Texas declared independence because the residents were frustrated by the lack of personal freedom. Originally, American settlers led by Moses Austen (and later his son Stephen) made an agreement with the Mexican government that they would adhere to the laws of Mexico, including becoming Catholic and not owning slaves. While this group understood the terms of settlement, their arrival opened the floodgates for unauthorized settlers to establish cotton farms. These settlers quickly became frustrated with the Mexican government and wanted independence.
