The Anti-Masonic party put forth the first third-party presidential candidate, William Wirt, in 1832. Wirt did not do well, only taking the state of Vermont. The party was created after the disappearance of a prominent Freemason, William Morgan, which sparked conspiracy theories. The party also bitterly opposed Andrew Jackson, so as it declined members became Whigs. Although the Ant-Masonic Party was short-lived, it was the first party to have a national convention and create a party platform.
