Women's roles became more restricted to the home as societies stabilized. Where the colonies were less developed, women and men would do essentially the same types of labor. However, once they were established, women's roles would be increasingly limited to the home as men took over farming or business. Women did generate revenue for the family, although it was more likely to be through bartering with neighbors than paid wages. This trend would continue as settlers moved west, and even into the late 19th century women in western regions would have more rights than those in the East. Gender roles were also more restrictive for upper class women than for lower class women.
