Following the Civil War, once slave labor was abolished, plantation owners and former slaves turned to the symbiotic arrangement of sharecropping, in which workers are allowed to live on and farm land owned by another person. The two parties split the profits derived from the land's production. In most cases, sharecropping benefitted the landowner far more than it benefitted the workers. Former slaves and disenfranchised whites were often taken advantage of because they were undereducated and were ill-equipped to seek legal representation.
