Unlike tornadoes, blizzards, floods, grasshopper predation, and droughts, livestock stampedes were not a frequent threat to the Great Plains. Farm life in the flat plains states was anything but tranquil. Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and northern Texas (in addition to portions of several other states) exist in a region commonly known as Tornado Alley because it is the most tornado-afflicted area on the planet. The northern portion of the American Great Plains, which includes Nebraska, also falls victim to severe winter weather each year. It is not uncommon for a cycle of floods and droughts to overtake the region, and swarms of insects that prey on the crops periodically consume millions of pounds of wheat or corn. Many of these forces were factors that led to the calamitous Dust Bowl of the early 20th century.
