African-American track star Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany, during the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, which held a belief in Aryan supremacy at the core of their platform. While Owens' defeats of German athletes were considered strong blows against the Nazis' supremacy claims, Owens himself was still subject to prejudice at home. He later described that time as a period of extreme contrasts. Surprisingly, Hitler was cordial to Owens following his four wins in Germany, where he was also allowed to enter all of the Olympic venues and other Berlin establishments through the front door. However, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt never even called Owens to congratulate him on his victories, and, once home, Owens was still subject to segregationist policies that required, among other things, that he enter "white" establishments through the back door or kitchen.
