Grover Cleveland was taunted by the slogan, "Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?" during his 1884 bid for the presidency as he faced an onslaught of personal attacks from James G. Blaine's campaign. Following Cleveland's win, his supporters replied to the slogan with the phrase, "Gone to the White House. Ha! Ha! Ha!" Cleveland's personal life always loomed large over his political career. He ultimately married in the White House during his first term, wedding Frances Folsom, the daughter of his former law partner. Despite their sizable age gap, she became enormously popular with the American people. Following his 1888 defeat by Benjamin Harrison (in the Electoral College, but not in the popular vote), Cleveland returned to the White House four years later, bolstered, in part, by his popular young wife. He became the only president in American history to have two non-consecutive terms.
