Calvin Coolidge was president during the Roaring Twenties, a period of widespread economic growth. But, he also advocated many deregulatory measures in federal oversight and significantly reduced the size of the federal government altogether. However, the laissez-faire policies that allowed the 1920s to become a period of unbridled excess ultimately led to the Great Depression in the following decade. Lack of bank regulation, in particular, played a pivotal role in the depression to come. It took massive government expansion under President Franklin D. Roosevelt four years later before the economy even began to show signs of eventual recovery.
