Gerald Ford was never elected to an office of the executive branch, though he served as both vice president and then president. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1973, when then-Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned amid charges of tax evasion and money laundering. Ford ascended to the vice presidency based on the recommendation of Congressional leaders. Then, when Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency the following summer as the Watergate scandal raged, Ford succeeded him to the presidency. He was defeated in a reelection bid in 1976.
