The National Organization for Women, commonly known as NOW, is the largest feminist organization in the United States. A coalition of 28 women and men founded the organization in 1966; Feminine Mystique author Betty Friedan and Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress, were among the founders. When it began, NOW was meant "to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men." After nearly 50 years of operation, NOW has expanded to work against discrimination predicated on race and sexual orientation, as well as gender.
