The Lydians were the first people to use coin currency, probably coinage made of electrum-a mixture of gold and silver. Lydia was a region in Anatolia, which is now primarily in the present-day country Turkey. The Lydians ultimately came under the rule of Cyrus the Great and the Achaemenid Empire. In the fifth century BCE, Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the people of Lydia created the first coin-based economy. Modern historians believe that their use of coins began in the seventh century BCE.
