Boudica was a queen of the Iceni tribe of Britain in the first century CE. She led a tribal revolt against occupying Roman forces in 60 or 61 CE. When her husband died, he willed his kingdom to his daughters, but the Romans refused to honor his will. They annexed the kingdom as if they had acquired it rightfully, and they assaulted Boudica and her daughters. She was victorious in her subsequent rebellion and compelled the Roman Emperor Nero to consider abandoning Britain altogether, but Boudica ultimately lost control of the kingdom to the Roman military. Shortly after her defeat, she either committed suicide to avoid capture or died of illness.
