In 54 CE, Emperor Claudius was murdered by poison, then, 14 years later, his successor, Emperor Nero, also met a tragic end when he committed suicide. Claudius was likely poisoned by one of four people: his official taster, his doctor, a notorious poisoner, or his fourth wife (to whom he was married at the time of his death). Some combination of the aforementioned parties may have been involved in the plot- his wife was almost definitely involved. Claudius was an efficient emperor, but he was often considered somewhat weak. Following a military coup in 68 CE, Claudius' successor, Nero (the son of his fourth wife), committed suicide. The Roman Senate ordered the military to execute Nero by beating him to death. As the horsemen approached the villa in which Nero was staying, he ordered one of his aides to stab him.
