The building depicted in the illustration is the Circus Maximus, the popular site of chariot races in Ancient Rome. The Circus Maximus could seat 150,000 people. It had three times the seating capacity of the Colosseum, which was located nearby, on the opposite side of the palace on Palatine Hill (a portion of which is depicted at the top of the illustration). Gladiator matches, dramas, and plays also occasionally took place in the Circus Maximus. But, those events were primarily performed in the Colosseum since they did not require as much space as chariot racing required.
