While the Renaissance in Italy was most visible through paintings, sculpture and architecture, the Renaissance in Portugal had the most profound effect on cartography. Encouraged by the worldly view of humanism (and the advances in math, science, and technology), Portugal set its sights on overseas exploration sooner than any of its rivals. By the early 15th century, Portuguese explorers were making voyages that no European had ever made, and they remained at the forefront of exploration throughout the period. Henry the Navigator, Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan were all Portuguese (though Magellan was funded by Spain).
