In 1605 a group of Catholics plotted to blow up the House of Lords during the Opening of Parliament to assassinate King James I of England and all of Parliament. The plot was uncovered the night before it was to be executed when one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was discovered under the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder. A deadly chase ensued to catch those involved in the plot, and the eight men who survived and were apprehended were ultimately tried and executed. Some anti-Catholic legislation was subsequently passed. England has since commemorated the event annually as Guy Fawkes Day (or Bonfire Night).
