Edward of Woodstock, or Edward, the Black Prince, was a skilled military leader during the middle ages. He has largely contributed to English victory over the French in the battles of Poitiers and Crecy. Because of illness, he did not ascend to the throne because he was outlived by his father. Instead his son, Richard II, was crowned after his death.
