Marco Polo's The Travels of Marco Polo (or Travels) encouraged an increase in trade between the West and the East. Through the advent of the printing press, the book was printed and available throughout Europe. Christopher Columbus was the most notable of Polo's known readers. An interest in traveling to the Far East was what compelled many of the explorer's during the Age of Discovery, and Polo's account was Europe's only documented experience in that region of the world prior to the boom in exploration.
