Pope Leo X made this proclamation. This figure, the second son of Lorenzo de Medici, was a lavish pope by every measure and wholeheartedly celebrated his position. He sold indulgences to fund the reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica during the Renaissance and traveled with a parade that included panthers, jesters, and his own white elephant, for major functions. The lavish culture he perpetuated around the papacy was demonstrative of what inspired Martin Luther to write his Ninety-Five Theses and begin the Protestant Reformation, which started during Leo X's reign. He excommunicated Luther from the Catholic Church in 1521.
