Russia was largely uneducated because of the stance of the Orthodox Church officials. Unlike Roman Catholic monks, who preserved great texts through the Middle Ages, Russian priests saw little use for education and actively discouraged it. Therefore, in an age when religious leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin were translating biblical texts into the vernacular, Russians were not yet using Arabic numbers and had missed basic technological advances. While reforms of the Church began in the second half of the 17th century, Russia was still significantly behind.
