Rousseau's novel, Emile, embodied the gender roles of the age. The story of a young man and his education, it was a tale of a life based on Enlightenment principles. The character Emile grows up to marry the quintessential Enlightenment woman, Sophie. She serves Emile in a role that reflects none of the equality espoused in the Enlightenment.
