Henry Morton Stanley went into the interior of Africa to locate Scottish humanitarian Dr. David Livingston. Livingston went to Africa and lived among the indigenous people, offering them medical care. When Livingston encountered Stanley, Livingston was oblivious to the fact that he was perceived as lost; however, Stanley's account of the rescue made him an instant celebrity in Britain. It also launched his career as an explorer, much of which was spent employed by Belgium.
