Prior to the French Revolution, the lords owned most of the land and did very little for the peasants in return. While the feudal structure of property rights remained, by the late 18th century, lords did little other than demand that the peasants support their increasingly expensive lifestyle. Although France was predominately agricultural, property laws ensured that the peasantry owned only forty percent of the land. The lack of property rights for the common people was one of the gross inequities that revolution sought to correct.
