The USPHS workforce, including occupational therapists, can be mobilized and deployed during disasters or other public health emergencies. USPHS occupational therapists have served on disaster mental health teams under the auspices of FEMA and the American Red Cross (ARC) during a number of natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and other hurricanes in Florida.
