Studies suggest that levels of self-determination upon leaving high school predict positive outcomes regarding employment and community access post-school (Shogren, Wehmeyer, Palmer, Rifenback, & Little, 2015; Wehmeyer, 2014). While not all transition-age youth have the capacity to be fully self-determined, most can engage in supported decision-making, whereby they get help from a trusted friend, family member, or professional in making decisions, but exercise control over who provides the decision-making help, and of the ultimate decisions (Jameson et al., 2015; Powers et al., 2012; Powers et al., 2018).
