Eutrophication is the process where excessive nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) are added to an aquatic ecosystem leading to increased growth and accumulation of plant and algal biomass, called algal blooms. These blooms can become so dense that they can block sunlight from reaching deeper parts of the water, decreasing oxygen production and causing oxygen depletion which can lead to the death of fish and other organisms in the water. Therefore, eutrophication leads to a decrease in oxygen, plants become very dense and abundant nutrient enrichment.
