The Battle of El Alamein marked the culmination of over two years of fighting in North Africa. In the spring of 1941, German troops came to the aid of retreating Italian forces in Libya; by June 1941, they had muscled the British back into Egypt. For more than a year the two armies pushed each other back and forth across the desert, but finally the British caught the Germans by surprise at El Alamein in October 1942. One month later, combined British and American forces landed in Morocco and Algeria. Over the next six months they pushed Germany out of North Africa and secured a jumping-off point for their invasion of southern Italy in July 1943.
