The ureter is a tube consisting of a mucosal lining, a muscular layer, and an outer fibrous layer. It drains urine from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder. The urethra is the tube that drains urine from the bladder to the urethral orifice (urinary opening) through which urine is discharged from the body. The urethra travels through the prostate gland and the penis in men. Enlargement of the prostate gland (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and cancers of the prostate may sometimes impinge on the urethra and slow or obstruct the discharge of urine. Both of these conditions are common in men over the age of 60. Women do not have a prostate gland, of course, and less often have bladder outlet obstruction. Finally, the detrusor is the outer muscular layer of the urinary bladder.
