Ventilation is the movement of gases into and out of the lungs. Adequate ventilation requires a strong diaphragm and intercostal muscles, as well as a patent airway. Oxygenation is the provision of oxygen-containing gas to the body. Oxygen cannot reach the alveoli of the lungs, however, and carbon dioxide cannot be excreted by the lungs without the propulsion provided by the muscles of respiration and an unobstructed airway. People in oxygen-rich environments can still die of asphyxia if they have an obstructed airway or ineffective ventilation. Airways can be obstructed by mucus or pus (e.g., in pneumonia), by foreign bodies (such as inhaled nuts or coins), or by the soft tissues of the neck (e.g., in obstructive sleep apnea).
