Hyperbaric oxygen is used to treat carbon monoxide poisoning. CO binds chemically to hemoglobin molecules in red blood cells, displacing oxygen from heme binding sites, producing carboxyhemoglobin, a stable molecule that blocks the uptake of oxygen and its delivery to tissues by circulating red cells. Carbon dioxide retention (a consequence of hypoventilation) does not improve with supplemental oxygen or hyperbaric oxygenation. Hyperkalemia (elevated levels of potassium in the blood) can be treated with a variety of agents, including insulin and glucose; furosemide; and oral potassium binders such as sodium polystyrene sulfate. Organophosphate toxicity (poisoning by agents such as herbicides, pesticides, or nerve gas, among others) results from inhibition of acetylcholinesterases. It is treated with supportive care (decontamination of the exposed person, intubation and mechanical ventilation, when necessary), and anticholinergic agents such as atropine.
