Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM; the presence of high blood glucose levels during pregnancy) poses significant risks for both the mother and the fetus. These include excessive fetal growth (macrosomia-a condition that results in difficult delivery and often the need for surgical [cesarean] delivery).
