An EKG detects the electrical activity of the heart, but it does NOT measure the pressures within the heart or the strength of its mechanical contraction. Patients with pulseless electrical activity, a common rhythm found in cardiac arrest, have normal electrical activity within the heart, but no heart beat or effective circulation.
