An electrocardiogram shows the speed of the heart's electrical activity and the rhythm of that electrical activity. It does not measure whether the heart is actually beating-that can be determined by feeling pulses or visualizing the heart fluoroscopically or with an echocardiogram. (In some patients during cardiac arrest, the heart continues to generate electrical activity, but the myocardium does not contract, a condition known as pulseless electrical activity.) How much blood the heart ejects into the aorta with each heartbeat can be measured with an echocardiogram as well. Other devices that assess the ejection fraction are multigated acquisition (MUGA) scans and angiograms.
