A biventricular pacemaker is used to increase cardiac output by causing the two ventricles to contract at the same time. This is known as cardiac resynchronization therapy and is accomplished by placing a third lead in the left ventricle (via the lateral or posterior left ventricular vein), in addition to placing leads in the right atrium and right ventricle. The extra lead is not in the right atrium. A temporary pacemaker has an external generator.
