Devices are now available that allow the initial withdrawal of blood mixed with IV fluid to remain in a closed system and be returned to the client once a sample is drawn. This is termed a blood conservation strategy and has resulted in a decrease in phlebotomy blood loss. Blood conservation is important because it is reported that 90% of ICU patients become anemic by the third day. A registered dietitian could provide suggestions to help the client get any nutritional elements he or she is deficient on, either by eating or through other nutritional methods. Performing hemoccult tests will not solve the problem; it is an assessment. The patient may or may not need an iron supplement, but this also does not address the problem of losing blood with each sample.
