Ethylene oxide is reactive and can result in an allergic reaction in latex-sensitive clients, so the instruments that have been sterilized with it need to be rinsed. The standard IV tubing and the ports are made with latex so polyvinyl chloride IV tubing without ports is preferred. If ports are present, they are covered with tape. Cords and tubes from monitoring equipment are wrapped in stockinette if they will come into contact with the client as they are made with latex. Latex allergy cases are scheduled early in the morning after the ventilation system has had all night to clear the air of latex dust.
