Drains provide a site of entry for microorganisms which may lead to infection. A white blood cell count within normal parameters is a sign that infection is not present. Without knowing why and where the drain was placed, there is no way to determine how much drainage there should be. Absence of pain and demonstrating drain care are good outcomes, but not related to the priority nursing diagnosis.
