EThe phylum Deuteromycota, often referred to as fungi imperfecti, is considered polyphyletic because it includes fungi that do not fit into the traditional classification based on sexual reproduction, hence precluding a clear phylogenetic classification. Members of this group are more accurately classified based on their asexual (anamorphic) forms, as their sexual forms (teleomorphs) are often unknown or not observed. This group is closely related to Ascomycota, as many Deuteromycota are later found to have sexual stages that classify them within the Ascomycota, showing strong morphological resemblances to this phylum.
