The New York City Draft Riot of 1863 was a violent uprising against the federal government’s attempt to enforce conscription laws during the Civil War. Working-class Irishmen, who felt that the draft unfairly targeted them and angered over suspected black attempts to take jobs, engaged in violence and destruction for four days. They lynched blacks and burned black-owned businesses. It resulted in the deaths of around 120 people, mostly African Americans, and caused millions of dollars in property damage.
