[Chapter 6, II A 2 a]. Removal of the duodenum would remove the source of the gastrointestinal (GI) hormones, cholecystokinin (CCK), and secretin. Because CCK stimulates contraction of the gallbladder (and, therefore, ejection of bile acids into the intestine), lipid absorption would be impaired. CCK also inhibits gastric emptying, so removing the duodenum should accelerate gastric emptying (or decrease gastric emptying time).
