5-azacytidine is a nucleoside analog that inhibits DNA methylation, leading to hypomethylation of DNA.  The nucleotide analog, 5-azacytidine (5-azaC), is incorporated into replicating DNA when DNA polymerase would normally use deoxycytidine as the substrate. The incorporation of a nitrogen instead of carbon at position 5 of the nucleobase prevents subsequent methylation of 5-azaC in the DNA when it is inserted into positions where the template strand of DNA contains CpG methylation sites. Thus, the incorporation of 5-azaC prevents conservation of methylation status in newly synthesized DNA, that is, results in hypomethylation.
