Cushing syndrome is caused by overproduction of cortisol, often due to excessive production of ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone) which stimulates cortisol release from the adrenal glands.  Cushing syndrome most often results from pituitary corticotrope adenomas resulting in excess ACTH production and secretion. The characteristic features of Cushing syndrome are psychiatric disturbances (depression, mania, and psychoses), central obesity, hypertension, diabetes, moon-shaped face, thin fragile skin, easy bruising, and purple striae (stretch marks).
