Seligman's theory of learned helplessness suggests that depression results when people believe they have no control over the outcomes of their actions, leading to a state of passivity and depression.  Even when they are in a situation they could potentially change, people who are in the state of learned helplessness do not expect to be able to make a difference. They feel, believe, and act as if nothing they do will matter.
