The superego is the component of the psyche that internalizes the moral standards of society, and operates as a self-critical conscience. Its development is driven by the need to balance and regulate the primitive impulses of the id, and ensure socially acceptable behavior according to the ideals and values of the culture. The superego functions based on the ego-ideal (the ideal self-image that we strive to adhere to) and the moral standards enforced by authority figures, such as parents or teachers. It is responsible for guilt, shame, and feelings of inadequacy, as well as for the sense of morality and responsibility that guide our actions.
