In the eighth month of pregnancy, a layer of fat is added to assist with temperature regulation. This is important as the fetus's body is not yet capable of regulating its own temperature, so the additional fat helps to insulate and protect them from changes in temperature. Fetal growth does continue, but not necessarily to the point of doubling. Viability, or the point at which the fetus could potentially survive outside of the womb with medical assistance, typically occurs around 24 weeks or the start of the third trimester.
