Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that converts RNA genome of retroviruses into DNA by reverse transcription, hence the name "reverse transcriptase". This DNA copy can then be integrated into the host cell genome and transcribed by the host cell's machinery to produce more copies of the virus. The process of producing DNA from an RNA template is unique to retroviruses and is not a normal part of gene expression in cells.
